WYSIWYG; rich text; visual editing. Creating content online has many names. It is functionality embedded in applications from blogs to CRM systems. Yet it remains a challenge for many software providers to get right, leaving users and developers alike frustrated.
Also released today is the Textbox.io WordPress plugin. So if you’re a blogger you can get started with Textbox.io right away.
Unlike other WYSIWYG editors, Textbox.io provides a rich set of writing tools without the need for hosting extra services or complex configuration. As a cloud based service the entire editing environment is available via the Textbox.io servers via a single script tag delivering you functionality including:
Media embedding. Simply copy a media URL from YouTube, Vimeo, Slideshare.net or hundreds of other services. Textbox.io connects with media services to turn URLs into rich media directly in their content.
Autocorrect and spell check as-you-type. Textbox.io’s built in spell checking service runs in the background as-you-type saving you from embarrassing mistakes, without the need for a separate server.
Markdown support. Whether writing is your passion or you just have an aversion to mice, Textbox.io’s markdown support will mean your fingers never have to leave the keyboard.
Snippets. Extend markdown with your own personalizations using Snippets. Snippets use Textbox.io’s macro enabling users to write a snippet but insert a passage – or any HTML for that matter.
Import local and web based images. Whether you want images from your harddrive, Flickr account, Facebook or another web service, Textbox.io enables you to retrieve images and embed them directly into your content.
Programmable macros. Textbox.io’s macro framework is completely customizable enabling you to customize it for your application.
Customizable. Fit Textbox.io to your application’s needs with scriptable customization options from the user interface through to content filters.
And this is just the beginning. Today Textbox.io is still in beta and the functionality it offers is just a small amount of what we have planned. We are building a powerful set of writing tools that will deliver a complete authoring environment for a fantastic writing experience with almost no integration overhead.

UPDATE: These have been discontinued. In 2015, Ephox merged with Moxiecode and became the owner of TinyMCE. TinyMCE ships as the default editor in WordPress and we will be brining Textbox.io’s great features to TinyMCE as we move forward.
