Why Ephox is the choice for WYSIWYG content creation: Image editing

September 14, 2016Kristel GeleraCompany News

This post continues our series explaining why Ephox is the only choice for rich-text (aka WYSIWYG) content creation and editing. Our previous post explores the features behind our premium Spell Checker Pro plugin.

Ephox revolutionized web content creation for authors in June 2015. At this time TinyMCE became the first open source editor* with image editing capabilities.

Called “Image Tools,” the feature enabled anyone to edit images, all within the rich-text editor itself.

* Ephox included image editing tools for many years in our Textbox.io and EditLive! editors.

High quality, impactful images are now a critical part of publishing content. From social media posts to the content itself. But editing images in external applications like Photoshop adds time and complexity. And we all need less complexity in our lives.

How Image Tools works

Upon selecting an image within the editor, an inline Image Tools toolbar will pop up. The toolbar provides the user with the ability to perform some basic operations such as flip and rotate.

You can perform more sophisticated image editing tasks also, within the editor itself. Clicking the “Edit” icon in the inline toolbar activates the editing interface.

From the editing interface, you can crop, resize and apply filters to your images!

Some of the familiar photo filters that we provide include:

  • Brightness
  • Sharpen
  • Contrast
  • Color levels

All this is performed right in your browser. When you have finished editing your image, click “Save” to apply your changes immediately.

Uploading images with Upload API

Although you could use data URL images in your content, and skip any integration, we recommend integrating with the new Upload API.

Using this API, when updating an image in the editor, is it saved to your server right away.

We also have Image Upload documentation available to help you out.

Help & support

You will find help with Image Tools in our documentation, plus server-side requirements. You can, of course, try out the new feature in our various demos on the website.

Stay tuned as we conclude our “Top 10 reasons why Ephox is the choice for WYSIWYG content creation” series, with Reason #10: The Ephox team.
